ART for AIR

Chiang Mai City Arts and Cultural Center

Chiang Mai, Thailand

February - April 2021

Sudaporn Teja was born and raised in Chiang Mai. Most of her works are colorful abstract art, utilizing soft and heavy brushstrokes alternately, resulting in paintings with colors that seem alive, flowing upon the canvas.

For the ART for AIR exhibition, Sudaporn Teja has chosen to expand her methods of presentation beyond the canvas, leading to the use of a traditional flag (Toong), a medium that is significant in traditional Lanna beliefs. The artist chose to paint upon Toong of various colors, exhibited together around the vase of a pagoda. Not only did the artist utilize traditional materials in place of canvas, but in terms of installation. Sudaporn also observed all the necessary rituals according to Lanna beliefs. The artist collaborated with the Mon Fai team to ensure that the piece is both a complete work of art while also adhering to local traditions.

The paintings on Toong floating in the wind around the pagoda base lets the audience feel the ‘air’ that flows past, while also experiencing the beliefs and faith of the Lanna people simultaneously.
