Sudaporn Teja (Thai: สุดาภรณ์ เตจา; b. 1986 in Chiang Mai, lives and works in Bangkok) is a Thai abstract artist and conceptual artist who intertwines life stories with insights from anthropological, sociological, and historical perspectives. She sources and synthesizes conceptual abstractions from the contemporary world—such as cultural beliefs, time, and freedom—transforming information into hidden symbols within her oeuvre. Sudaporn is known for her exhibitions, in which she seamlessly presents abstract art and conceptual art in response to both emotions and notions through an interdisciplinary approach. Her work spans various media, including abstract painting, installation, video, and photography. Her artworks often reference primary research, real-life narratives, historical archives, and literature.
Born and raised in Chiang Mai, her family name Teja has a long artistic lineage dating back to the reign of King Inthawichayanon (1817-1897). It was Sudaporn’s great-great-grandfather, Oon-Teja (Luang Maneewan), who was an accomplished vocalist and considered as one of the finest musicians in his region and time. Her great grandmother was also an accomplished Thai Kern craftsman, whose family made silverwares and various types of weavings. Sudaporn’s Lanna artistic blood runs thick. These abstract works are her calls from within, the expressions by which she chose as a professional artist.
